In 1975, a small group of local families began working together to develop programs and provide support to people with a disability, their families, and to assist others in the community who were disadvantaged or underprivileged. 45 years on, their vison and commitment has evolved into Mpower Inc, an accredited, community-based agency providing quality aged and disability services that enable people to have meaningful connections to their communities throughout south-west Victoria. Offering a range of services and community programs across south-west Victoria, our funding is received from government sources, primarily the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services and also donations from philanthropic trusts. Mpower Warrnambool continues to work towards their vision of a community inspired and empowered by people of all ages, abilities and differences.
Mpower is based in Warrnambool and provides support services to the Shires of Moyne, Corangamite, Southern Grampians, Glenelg and the City of Warrnambool. Deaf Access Victoria also provide services to the City of Greater Geelong, Borough of Queenscliff, Colac/Otway Shire and Surf Coast Shires.
Mpower runs a variety of centre-based play programs that provide parents with a friendly environment where they can spend time with their children and help them improve their learning and development in a relaxed and unpressured play-based environment. Our centre-based play programs provide a variety of developmental play activities to encourage the development of language, new skills, social confidence and independence that will assist children to prepare for kindergarten. Through our play programs we are able to support children to learn how to interact with others, share and take turns, develop self-control, form friendships and learn about and experience routines.
Play programs help parents understand play-based learning, build their awareness of children’s developmental milestones, support and encourage positive parenting strategies and learn how they can be actively involved in their child’s learning. Parents are able to support one another and share their stories and experiences, as well as the day to day issues they face in raising a child with a disability. We are readily available to assist you with ideas for play that can be used at home and resources that may be available, as well as supporting you to identify and set goals for your child that can be achieved through a developmentally appropriate play-based program. Centre-Based Play programs are currently held in Warrnambool.
A small group of local families concerned about this lack of support decided to do something about it, and proved that where there’s a need there’s a community ready to help.
Forty five years later their vision and commitment has evolved into Mpower, a leader across south-west Victoria in providing quality aged and disability services that enable people to have meaningful connections to their communities.
45 years ago, Mpower started with a group of local families concerned about the lack of support for people with a disability and the under-privileged in our community. Bringing together dedicated volunteers in Warrnambool, Mpower has now grown to become a leader in community based support services, however we still need your help.
Volunteering with Mpower can be highly rewarding, and we appreciate all of the help we receive. We recognise the invaluable contribution made by our volunteers, and offer full training and support to these incredible people who give their time freely for others.
If you’ve ever considered offering your time to a community volunteer organisation, we would love to hear from you. Please contact us on (03) 5561 8111 if you would like to make a difference as a volunteer with Mpower.
